The time has come. HBO's insanely popular fantasy epic, Game of Thrones, returns to television tomorrow night (April 6), and what's more, it promises to bring even more death and violence than the last three seasons did.

That's an incredible feat considering the bloody note season 3 ended on. The climatic episode, "The Rains of Castamere," shocked many fans (those who didn't read George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, anyway) when several major characters were axed off in the brutal Red Wedding.

Yet, it's moments like this that makes Game of Thrones one of the most sensational shows on air. Its plot is far from predictable. There's no guarantee that the "heroes" will prevail, or the "villains" will get their just desserts. And no character is safe.

George R.R Martin talked to CNN entertainment about his decision to write the Red Wedding.

"I've said in many interviews that I like my fiction to be unpredictable. I like there to be considerable suspense," said Martin.

The new season looks to bring plenty of suspense. Season 4 will kick off with the wedding of the loathsome, spoiled teen king Joffrey and his sweetheart Margaery. Then there's Dany, with her army of freed slaves and trio of newly grown dragons. Jaime reunites with his sister/lover (minus a hand, that is) and the new character Oberlyn appears in King's Landing, possibly seeking vengence.

So what should we expect from Season 4? Author Martin says, "Since Song of Ice and Fire so often subverts reader expectations and avoids traditional fantasy storytelling structures, should fans have any real hope that this tale will have a happy ending? As The Boy recently said on Thrones, 'If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.'"

Fans may have to anticipate a bittersweet ending to series, but who knows? With two books still yet to be written, and the show planned for seven to eight seasons at most, the only thing we can say with assuredness is that nothing is certain in the world of Westeros.
