If you thought the ongoing Apple iPhone vs. Samsung Galaxy battle was gnarly, then you're definitely not familiar with the current Android wars of 2014. Three new Android handsets have either launched already or will be launching quite soon. All three of these phones, the HTC One M8, the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5, are premium smartphones. They will attempt to beat each other in sales numbers, but just who knows how successful they will be. They could wind up cannibalizing each other in the marketplace.

For brevity's sake we'll compare two of these phones today: the weeks old HTC One M8 flagship from the diminutive Taiwanese company and the LG G3 handset from everyone's favorite Korean electronics firm. The G2 came out of nowhere and slowed the HTC One M7's thunder late last year. Whether HTC future-proofed its successor this time around remains to be seen.

The M8 has, to the chagrin of bass heavy fans the world over, ended its partnership with Beats Audio. However, that's not to say that the audio experience on this handset is lacking. In fact, the bass is more than decent and in terms of volume, the phone's built-in speakers deliver 25 percent more oomph. The G3's speakers will likely be similar in performance to the M8 since LG finally decided to give the handset front facing speakers of its own.

Both of these phones tout large screens. The M8 isn't the lightest nor is it the thinnest smartphone in town, but that's likely because HTC opted to give it a 5-inch Full HD panel. GottaBeMobile has gone on record stating that the G3's screen will be slightly bigger than the M8s at 5.3 or 5.5 inches. That firmly puts the device into the vaunted phablet category, in which the Samsung Galaxy Note series rules. The screen resolution will also be an eyeball-pleasuring 2K (greater than Full HD) resolution!

Performance wise the M8 is the current king. With a speedy quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip from Qualcomm multitasking is no longer a lag-ridden chore. Yet, the G3 will crush the M8 by offering a world class 805 chip also from Qualcomm. The 805 is a completely new chip whereas the 801 is just a souped up 800 (which itself was featured in the G2).

Unfortunately, all of this feature porn may not matter since the LG G3 and HTC One M8 both face stiff competition from Samsung. Why? Well, Samsung's Galaxy S5 is similar to the iPhone in that it has a large, pre-existing and largely loyal fan base. The entirety of HTC's assets still don't compare to Samsung's marketing budget. And without the proper marketing dollars to woo consumers, HTC's latest phone may fall on deaf ears. Also, the G2 was a bit of a niche phone. You didn't see many Android users with one. Most people seemed to have one of the Galaxy phones. Will things be different when the G3 comes to town?

We'll just have to wait and see.
