Puerto Rican music superstar Ricky Martin shared his excitement on social media to learn about Puerto Rico's first successful adoption by a same-sex couple.

Martin, who is the single father of two twin boys, took to Twitter and shared the news about the first gay adoption with his fans writing, "What happiness my people!! Tremendous news Puerto Rico!!!"

The adoption was of a young Puerto Rican girl named Juliana Acosta Vélez by Ángeles Judith Acosta Rodríguez and Carmen Milagros Vélez Vega. The couple petitioned, for the second time, for the girl to have both of their last names, reported El Nuevo Dia.

On March 20, 2015, the Puerto Rican government announced it would no longer defend a law in court that prohibited same-sex marriage, therefore making it possible for same-sex couples to pursue adoption, reported Time.

Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla revealed that regardless of his own beliefs, he is a devout Catholic opposed to gay marriage, he fights for the equal rights of all citizens.

"Our constitutional system does not allow discriminatory distinctions such as that contained in the Civil Code concerning the rights of same-sex couples," he said. "Everyone knows my religious beliefs, but it is not for political leaders to impose our beliefs. We must push for progress in civil and human rights for all citizens equally. As Governor of Puerto Rico, that's my duty."

At the time, Martin shared his gratitude with the governor on Twitter.

"My thanks to Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla for demonstrating that he is a leader who is not afraid of the challenges of the present," he said.

"His support for the determination of the Boston court on marriage equality does justice to equality. My appreciation to senators and representatives and my sisters and brothers who joined this struggle for equality and human rights.

"Today is a great day for my island, my heart beats fast in my chest. How proud I am to live in a country of equality. I love you Puerto Rico."
