No more dropped calls folks. AT&T is expanding its wireless connectivity to 242 more NYC Subway Stations.

"Bringing wireless service into the New York City subway has been a big step forward for our customers, and we're pleased that even more of them will be able to take advantage of it," said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast in a statement released on Wednesday.

He continued, "The ability to make and receive phone calls underground is an important improvement for safety and security as well as convenience, and our customers will certainly appreciate it."

AT&T's expansion stems from its contract with Transit Wireless, a company that owns and operates all of NYC's subway wireless network.

So far, AT&T service is available in 36 stations in midtown Manhattan and Chelsea. By the summer, 40 more stations will contain AT&T connectivity.

Although this new underground wireless installment will no doubt be great and benefit commuters, the 242 station expansion will be a gradual process.

The full installment of subway wireless connection is expected to take a few a few years with an estimated prediction of 2017 as its completion year.

The installation project is broken down into a seven-part phase and AT&T has only reached phase 2 so far.

AT&T is currently in the process of installing equipment to bring 3G and 4G LTE service to 40 stations as part of Phase 2 of the subway project. Phase 2, which is expected to be completed this summer, comprises 11 stations in midtown Manhattan, including Grand Central, Herald Square, and Bryant Park, as well as all 29 underground stations in Queens, PC Mag reports.

As the AT&T installation proceeds, Transit Wireless is currently in negotiation with other providers that include Verizon and T-Mobile.
