Michael Fassbender will star in the highly-anticipated "Assassin's Creed" movie set to release next year. To prep up for his role, the multi-award winning actor recently revealed that he has finally played a game in the popular open-world video game series.

The 38-year-old thespian admitted to Entertainment Weekly that he never played "Assassin's Creed" before being approached to play the lead role in the upcoming movie adaptation. He finally picked up the controller, mainly to learn more about the physicality of the game's lead characters.

Fassbender is aware of the passion that "Assassin's Creed" fans have for the franchise. This is why he and the people behind the film project are striving to find "something special" and provide the historical accuracy and attention to detail that series veterans have come to expect.

"We're really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element," said Fassbender. "We're working hard to make this something special."

As to what he learned from playing the game, Fassbender emphasized the physical element involved in navigating through the open-world environment, saying "a lot of the stuff in the game is parkour."

He also noted that a large amount of gameplay is dedicated to "close quarters fighting." He pointed out that since the lead character has blades on his wrists, combat usually involves getting in close to the target, as oppose to long-range attacks.

Fassbender will no doubt perform these feats in the movie, but it was only revealed recently that he will be doing the stunts by himself. He laughingly said he has learned how to roll over and tumble turn.

"Assassin's Creed" will hit cinemas in December 2016. It will tell an entirely new narrative set in 15th century Spain, although it shares the same universe with the games. Fassbender plays two characters namely Callum Lynch and his 15th-century Spanish assassin ancestor Aguilar.

The actor's "Macbeth" co-star Marion Cotillard will also appear in the film together with Jeremy Irons, Michael Kenneth Williams and Brendan Gleeson. Interestingly enough, the movie is directed by "Macbeth" director Justin Kurzel.

A viral marketing campaign for the film has already begun. Set images of Fassbender in costume were posted on Facebook earlier this month, courtesy of Skript.fr. On Dec. 22, the film's official Twitter page outed an image of an Abstergo item that might play a key role in the movie's narrative.

Franchise developer Ubisoft has at least six films in the pipeline. "Assassin's Creed" will eventually be followed by the movie adaptations of "Rabbids," "Watch Dogs," "Splinter Cell," "Far Cry" and "Ghost Recon."
