Even though Sheldon and Amy have finally consummated their relationship, the executive producer of "The Big Bang Theory" revealed that there is a possibility that Amy will get back with her ex-boyfriend when the popular CBS sitcom returns next month.

The Season 9 winter finale of the hit comedy series ended with a big bang (pun intended) after Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) shared an exciting and satisfying night together. They both appeared to be quite satisfied after their very first sexual encounter with each other, but Sheldon made it clear that he doesn't plan to get intimate again until her next birthday.

However, although the odd couple has reached a new level in their 5.5-year relationship following their shocking breakup in Season 8, showrunner Steve Molaro hinted that this does not mean that viewers have seen the last of Amy's ex.

"He's a busy guy, but the door is wide open for him to come back," Molaro told TVLine about Amy's ex, who is played by actor Stephen Merchant. "We were honored to have him."

Molaro also told TVLine that the show will not continue to focus on their sexual encounter, and will instead "move on" to focus on other characters for a while.

"I think we will move on until the next time we talk about it," Molaro said. "Sheldon in that moment has a very clear plan in mind at the end of the episode. It's a chance for us to take a little breather from the weightiness of the Sheldon-Amy relationship and put the spotlight on some of the other amazing relationships and characters that we have on our show."

Season 9 Episode 12 will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
