El Niño formally arrived this week in Los Angeles and, at best, it can be a big hassle for the people living in the city or at worst, it can lead to fatal consequences.

The weather phenomenon is expected to bring heavy storms and snow, which may result to closed roads, harder commuting experience and even damaged properties.

Luckily, many sites like The Los Angeles Times provided some useful tips to survive El Niño like a pro.

1. Remove Any Waste or Garbage Lying in Your Home
Although it's quite obvious by now, some people forget to clear out their pipes and gutters or remove leaves in their front yard.

ABC7 noted that, with the heavy downpour currently rampaging the city, your home's rainwater clearing systems must be free from any kind of obstruction.

2. Do not Repipe Your House Until Summer
We advised the clearing your pipes or gutters, but unless really necessary, it's best to wait until summer to do a major re-piping of your home.

Look at it this way, would you or your plumber like to work on roofs and pipes with heavy downpour pounding you?

3. Always Check if Your Car is Ready for the Weather
For those who cannot skip work and must brave through the rain and snow, check your car's tires if they are properly inflated or if the thread is pretty worn out.

A rule of thumb: If it's worn out more than 50 percent, it's safe to say that you should replace them with a new set. Apart from the wheels, you should also consult a mechanic if your car itself is ready for the harsh weather ahead.

It's also best to winter-proof your vehicle by stocking on antifreeze, wipers, batteries, snow tires and even throw in an emergency kit like tire chains, jumper cables, ice scrapers and the likes.

4. Purchase or Renew Your Flood Insurance
According to Flag Staff Business News, the risk of flooding due to El Niño is real. Having a flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program covers damage to your home and belongings caused by flooding.

Having an insurance to cover your property in case of unexpected damages can take a load of your back and your wallet.

5. Stay Away From Trees
During storms, trees can be really dangerous. Specifically, be wary of large trees on hillsides, parks, open spaces or even the one in your backyard.

Strong winds and heavy rains can cause a tree to uproot, which can lead to fatal consequences.

As they say, prevention is always better than a remedy. So remember to always be safe and always be ready.
