"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has been tremendously successful and is all but a lock to take the box office crown worldwide from the current holder "Avatar."

With Star Wars euphoria reaching fever pitch, it is no surprise that anticipation for the next installment in the franchise to also become the most anticipated film of 2016. According to Variety, a survey by Fandango has shown that "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is the film that movie goers are most excited to see.

Here are a few reasons why this film, which is getting far less fanfare (so far) than its predecessor, is one to get excited for.

1.       The Unknown

What made "The Force Awakens" such a marvel for people was that they were entering virtually unknown territory. Where was the story of Luke, Han and Leia going? Who were the new heroes and villains?

"Rogue One" has an interesting situation. Like the prequel films, everyone knows where this one is going. The difference? While everyone knew that Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi would be crucial parts in the story, no one knows any of the characters in the new film and what role they play in the larger universe.

2.       Gareth Edwards

The filmmaker came out of nowhere with the sci-fi indie film "Monsters" before creating the latest "Godzilla," a film that got that particular franchise back on track. While "Godzilla" was not for everyone, there is no denying that the film was rather experimental in its form, the monster rarely appearing for most of the movie's running time and yet dominating the proceedings throughout. The same happened for "Monsters," though that film managed to fit in a strong love story throughout. It will be interesting to see how he managed to make this one work.

3.       All-Star Cast

Has there ever been a "Star Wars" movie with such a list of major stars? Felicity Jones is the lead and joining her are Diego Luna, Mads Mikkelsen, Forest Whitaker and Donnie Yen. You have a number of major award winners and nominees in that list, making it is possible that this film could wind up being the best-acted "Star Wars" movie to date.

4.       Darth Vader?

One rumor floating around is the possibility of seeing Darth Vader in the movie. While some intuit that he might be nothing more a mere cameo, it is very probable that the Dark Lord of the Sith will have some impact on the film. People are undoubtedly eager to see what he has to contribute to the new Star Wars universe under Disney's reign.
