Picking the next U.S. president may soon come down to who has the most fashionable pair of boots.

Political reporter Michael Barbaro joined GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio on the campaign trail recently and noticed the Florida senator sporting a rather swanky pair of boots.

Rubio's choice of footwear has since caught the attention of the fashion world. Tina Nguyen of Vanity Fair said that the boots might have cost between $85 and $2,000.

Jessica Roy of New York magazine's fashion blog The Cut pointed out that they looked like the $995 Maison Margiela boots that Harry Styles favored.

"Though Rubio's views may be conservative, his taste in footwear is anything but," said Joe Zee of Yahoo! Style. "And he's causing a lot of attention from the ankles down, especially when people are noticing that his boots give him that extra inch (or two). Given that the 5-foot-10 Rubio is the average height of past presidents, maybe he's trying to gain some edge with this footwear choice."

Rubio's campaign told Politico that the Republican hopeful's kicks were just a modest pair of Florsheims worth $100. Nevertheless, that didn't stop the Ted Cruz camp from using them to smear Rubio.

That being said, Cruz is no stranger to expensive boot heels. The 5-foot-8 Texas senator has been very open about his favorite black ostrich skin "argument boots," which he has been wearing since his days as the state's solicitor general. The pair even has its own Twitter account.

"Litigators are kind of superstitious," Cruz told C-Span in 2013. "So anytime I went into court to argue a case I wore my argument boots. I had them resoled four or five times."

On a more serious note, Donald Trump said questions surrounding the Texas senator's eligibility to become president could become a major roadblock for the Canadian-born GOP candidate. But legal scholars have agreed that Cruz is qualified to occupy the Oval Office.

Solicitors General Neal Katyal and Paul Clement explained that Cruz, who was born in Canada to an American mother, has all the requirements to be called a "natural born citizen." Thus, he can run for the U.S. presidential elections.

"An individual born to a U.S. citizen parent -- whether in California or Canada or the Canal Zone -- is a U.S. citizen from birth and is fully eligible to serve as President," said the bipartisan duo in a statement shared with ABC News.
