Multiple product listings by major retailers in the U.S. have potentially leaked the release date of "Mafia 3" ahead of any formal announcement from 2K Games.

As per an image of a Best Buy pre-order card sent to IGN by a fan, "Mafia 3" is set to release on April 26, 2016. Interestingly, GameStop and Amazon have also listed the same release date for the game.

2K Games quickly issued a statement to GameSpot regarding the leaked image. The company said no official release date has been confirmed but "Mafia 3" will launch in 2016 as part of Take-Two Interactive's fiscal year 2017. The gaming studio added that it's normal practice for retailers to list placeholder dates before an official release date is announced, mainly due to the requirements of their respective operating systems.

It should be noted that Take-Two's FY17 starts on April 1, 2016. This tidbit adds a bit more credence to the date listed by Best Buy, GameStop and Amazon, especially since all three are showing the same timeframe.

Ever since 2K showcased the game's announcement trailer at Gamescom 2015, fans have been clamoring for more information about the title. The latest development surely carries a lot of weight, but fans should hold their excitement until 2K reveals an official release date.

At any rate, if the game's recent gameplay footage is any indication of what's to come, the final version of "Mafia 3" will surely be worth the wait.

The game stars Vietnam War veteran Lincoln Clay. He is a half-black, half-white American who has found a home in the Deep South. The game is set in the late '60s, which makes Clay's adventures all the more interesting.

Phil Savage of PC Gamer was one of the lucky few who witnessed an exclusive in-depth gameplay demo of "Mafia 3."

"In the demo, Clay's mission is to take control of a Mafia-owned drug den. No easy task in its own right, but Clay doesn't yet know where it is," said the video game junkie. "On his way, I see New Orleans wrought in stunning detail. The excellent lighting creates a dark, smoky atmosphere punctuated by vibrant bursts of light from signs and store fronts."

2K Hanger 13's creative director Haden Blackman mentioned that "Mafia 3" will continue the tradition of past "Mafia" games. It features a compelling crime story that's set during a turbulent place and time in America.

Although the official release date for "Mafia 3" is still up in the air, the game will be playable on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC when it eventually hits the market.
