Mexican officials confirmed the death of at least 20 people after a bus plunged into a ravine on Sunday, Jan. 10, in Atoyac, Veracruz, Mexico. The bus which belongs to Paso del Toro line was carrying players of an amateur soccer team along with some members of their families.

According to the emergency management officials, the crash took place around 9:00 a.m. in the mountainous region of Veracruz. The team left Camaron de Tejeda and was on their way to a match in Cordoba when the bus careened along the Atoyac-Paso del Macho highway before it broke the safety barrier and plunged 30 meters down the river, Fox News Latino reported.

Investigators who responded to the scene deduced that the passenger bus was running on high speed, causing the driver to lose control. It then bumped into the safety guard railings and eventually fell into the ravine. Nevertheless, some of the survivors told the police that the driver miscalculated the curve ahead of them and that can be the main reason for the fatal road accident.

Initially, the local officials recovered 16 bodies and 10 injured people were pulled out. The number of deaths subsequently rose to 20 and 25 for the injured. Among the fatalities include an unspecified number of children.

Aside from the local police, firefighters, staffs from Red Cross, personnel from emergency management and residents also helped. They worked together to get the injured people out of the wreckage.

Victims were brought to hospitals in Cordoba city which is about 155 miles away from the site of the crash. The fate of the bus driver was not mentioned. The condition of the wounded passengers is not available as well.

NBC New York has learned that the Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto had reached out to the victims' families and expressed his condolences via the social networking site, Twitter.

"I regret the the tragic accident at the bridge of Ayotac, Veracruz where several people were killed."

"My condolences to the families and hoping for the speedy recovery of the injured," President Nieto added.
