Although WGN's new TV series Salem is planned for its first showing this Sunday at 10 p.m. (9 central), the creepy trailer has already been released online. The show was created by Adam Simon and Brannon Braga and the story is about the world of the witch trials and a period filled with fear, hysteria and suspicion. The lead stars include Janet Montgomery, who will play Mary Sibley, Seth Gabel as Cotton Mather, Shane West as John Alden, Xander Berkeley as Magistrate Hale and Ashley Madekwe as Tituba, the most powerful of the witches.

This is going to be the first scripted series done by WGN America. The 2-minute trailer features loud and violent scenes, showing that witches are real and that they are in control. The story is set in 17th century Salem, Mass. and it tries to explore what truly triggered the village's infamous witch trials while daring to disclose the dark and supernatural realities in hiding behind this era of American history. The show tries to tackle the idea that, in Salem, witches were real but not what they were thought to be. The plot centers on Mary Sibley, the lovely and merciless, but vulnerable, first lady of an ailing but rich Selectman of Salem.

According to the creator, Emmy nominee Brannon Braga -- who is also known for 24 and Star Trek -- Salem is more grounded. It tells about witches, not vampires, wolves or magic. It is also expected that the show will be adult-themed with sex, violence and Satanism, making it more appropriate for an adult audience. Aside from trailers, behind the scenes videos were also shown about the new TV series. What makes the series interesting is that it is based on past historical events and includes characters based on real people. Do not expect fairy dust and enchanting sorceries in Salem because the witches here are darker and the producers expect viewers to be spellbound.
