The executive producer of "The Vampire Diaries" dropped new spoilers about what's to come in Mystic Falls when the drama series returns from its winter recess later this month.

As fans may recall, the midseason finale ended with a shocking twist after Julian stabbed Damon with the Phoenix stone sword. In turn, Damon's soul was sucked into a prison world that forces him to re-live every bad thing that he has ever done. Later on, Nora (Scarlett Byrne) stabbed his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) with the Phoenix stone, leaving both of the Salvatore brothers trapped in their own hell-like universes.

A synopsis for the upcoming episode, which is titled "Hell Is Other People," reveals that Damon will confront a traumatic experience from his past while trapped in the Phoenix stone.

"After finding himself on the wrong end of Julian's (guest star Todd Lasance) plan to avenge Lily's (guest star Annie Wersching) death, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) awakens to find himself trapped inside the Phoenix stone, tormented by a traumatic experience from his time in the Civil War and forced to face his darkest demon in order to get out. On the outside, Bonnie (Kat Graham) is in a race against the clock to get Damon out before the effects of the Phoenix stone take over and leave him changed forever," it reads, according to Carter Matt.

Once the series returns, showrunner Caroline Dries promises that fans will go on a "really fun ride" as they explore Damon's personal version of hell, she told TVLine. His experience will also have "huge ramifications" on the overall story arch, and could trigger the return of Michael Trevino's Tyler Lockwood.

Stefan's trip to hell will also have major consequences, though "his hellscape will be shown differently from the way we see Damon's," says Dries.

Meanwhile, Alaric and Caroline's relationship will "evolve as these babies bring them together," teased the EP, adding that Caroline is "not necessarily falling hard out of love with Stefan. It's in no way a natural progression for a love story."

She also revealed that Enzo will be a gateway "into a new universe we're setting up for the rest of the season. He's looking for a place to fit, and he finds it."

In addition, fans can also look to learning more about Enzo's backstory and his past relationship with a mysterious character named Alex, played by "The Following" alum Mouzam Makkar.

"She has ties to Enzo's backstory," said Dries about Alex. "As he's trying to find his place in the world, she comes in and says, 'Let me help you out with that.' Is she good? Is she bad? What's her bigger agenda? We'll pull back her layers as the season goes on."

According to TVLine, Alex is described as a "beautiful, charming and cocky researcher" who runs an unnamed organization. Makkar's character has also been called a "viper in sheep's clothing."

"The American Horror Story" star will make her first appearance in Episode 14 and then reoccur throughout the season.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns with "Hell Is Other People" on Friday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
