Actress Kate del Castillo's upcoming Netflix series has not been affected by her controversial connection to recently captured drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

According to Deadline, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that the actress will continue to participate in the series, titled "Ingobernable," regardless of the controversy surrounding her relationship with the kingpin.

Sarandos revealed that Netflix has been in contact with the actress and that production plans were still on track as of Jan. 17.

"So far, so good," Sarandos said. "It's very complicated, but so far, so good."

During the 2016 Television Critics Association Winter tour, Sarandos also commented on the matter, according to Variety.

"It's a telenovela within a telenovela. It's a strange turn of events for sure," he added.

The Mexican-American star was confirmed to star in Netflix's brand new series back in October 2015, and Sarandos released a statement, on behalf of Netflix, supporting the actress.

"Netflix is committed to the creation of high-quality, Spanish-language original series for Mexico, U.S., Latin America and the world," he said. "We are thrilled to be working with one of Latin America's biggest and most talented stars, Kate del Castillo, on 'Ingobernable,' our next original series produced in Mexico."

Del Castillo also shared her excitement over starring in the series about the fictional first lady of Mexico.

"I absolutely love the role. It's challenging, it's risky, it's compelling," del Castillo said. "The storyline and the cast are excellent. The kind of content Netflix is synonymous with. I am so happy to be part of the team."

The actress has popularized the figure of the strong female lead in crime dramas on Spanish-language television with roles in "La Reina del Sur" and "Dueños del Paraíso."

Del Castillo became part of "El Chapo" headlines when it was discovered that she met with him in private, along with actor Sean Penn, while the famous drug lord was on the run from authorities. The star has remained mostly quiet about claims of her role in the meeting, but she took to Twitter on Jan. 13 to thank fans for their support and to reveal that she intended to set the record straight soon.
