Google might allow one company to make its next two Nexus smartphones. It will be several months before the phones are announced, but HTC might already be working on them.

The next two Google Nexus smartphones are codenamed the T50 and T55 by HTC, Tech Radar reports. Both of the phones are said to have smaller screens than the 2015 versions of the Nexus.

Respected Twitter user LlabTooFer, who has been reliable with leaks in the past, confirmed the two phone's code names from HTC.

Usually Two Separate Companies

Typically Google allows two separate companies to build the Nexus phones. In 2015, there was the Nexus 5X built by LG and the Nexus 6P built by Huawei. The Nexus 5X has a 5.2-inch screen and the Nexus 6P has a 5.7-inch screen. Google still plans to build two devices, one with a smaller screen and one with a larger screen, but they will allow HTC to make both phones.

Smaller Screens

The smaller screen Nexus would decrease its screen size down to 5.0 inches and the larger screen Nexus would have a 5.5-inch screen. The 5.5-inch screen makes sense because the 5.7-inch screen was probably a little too big for a large smartphone market.

HTC has experience with Google and the Nexus brand of smartphones and tablets. Google created the first Nexus phone, the Nexus One, and just recently the Nexus 9 tablet.

The latest Nexus smartphones, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P were just released in September, so there is plenty of time for changes on the next two Nexus smartphones.

Huawei Rumor

An earlier rumor suggested that Huawei was set to build one of the two new Nexus smartphones again this year. If HTC is building both phones, it would be a shift in the way Google does business.
