Lionel Messi and his reps are searching for a little boy to give him a special gift. The young lad was spotted on social media wearing a blue and white plastic bag with “Messi 10” written on the back in honor of his football idol.

The Independent wrote that based on the photo that surfaced on Twitter, the custom shirt featured the soccer star’s national team stripes. The image initially surfaced on Turkish fan blogs. There were rumors that the child was located in Dohuk region in Iraq, which was ravaged by war.

The picture immediately spread to other countries through social media, as sports agencies and fans initiated various campaigns with the main objective of finding the kid and handing him a real jersey.

“Tremendous image. A child in Iraq manages to play in his idol’s t-shirt. The Beautiful Game,” Spanish sports journal Juez Central tweeted.

“RT to help us find this kid so we can get him the Messi shirt he deserves,” tweeted BreatheSport.

Messi10stats, a fan-operated account with close to 700,000 followers, claimed that they already communicated with Messi’s representatives. Reportedly, Messi’s contacts wish to know the kid’s identity for the athlete to make arrangements for his young fan. The report from Messi10stats has yet to be confirmed.

Standard Media revealed that many people were inspired by the current state and sadness of a small boy who could not afford to have a real shirt featuring his football hero's number. The Argentine forward is one of the most famous players in the world and also considered as the greatest player in the history of the sport. Messi has won the FIFA Ballon D’Or five times since 2009, with the latest award given earlier in January 2016.

However, Messi has not personally acknowledged that he has received news about the child in the makeshift blue and white jersey.

In March 2010, Messi was made a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has actively supported underprivileged children around the globe in the past years. He has visited countries like Costa Rica and Haiti to raise awareness and offer support. He donated around $446,000 to UNICEF in 2015.

Previously, a Messi-autographed football sold for over $63,700, Daily Mail stated. If Messi finds out about the kid’s predicament, it is very likely that he will respond kindly and offer more than a jersey.

More updates and details on the search are expected soon.
