Diet trends are becoming more absurd as people are becoming obsessed with weight loss. From raw diet, to gluten-free diet, it seems like the food options are limited. Who would have thought that going on a diet can actually do more harm than good?

Some of these health trends can actually alter the body's regular process, leaving the person sick and unhealthy. Listed below are a few health trends that are actually harmful as per the Real Simple website and ABC.

Tapeworm Diet

What could be more disgusting than eating tapeworms for weight loss?  The tape worm diet is ridiculously dangerous that it got banned in the United States. Tapeworms are parasitic, segmented worms that absorbs nutrients from the digestive system. They're acquired through uncooked food and meat from animals that are infected with the parasite.

As per Today, the diet sparked outrage after a woman from Iowa tried ingesting the parasitic worms which then aroused concerns toward health care professionals. Dr Particia Quinlisk from the Iowa Department of Public Health stated that, "Ingesting tapeworms is extremely risky and can cause a wide range of undesirable side effects, including rare deaths, those desiring to lose weight are advised to stick with proven weight loss methods - consuming fewer calories and increasing physical activity."

The Cotton Ball Diet

As per ABC, the entire diet involves ingesting "five cotton balls dipped in orange juice, lemonade or a smoothie in one sitting." In doing so, the individual would eventually feel full without gaining additional weight, which is undeniably harmful.

Brandi Koskie, a managing editor of the "Diets in Review" website, stated, "Nothing good can come of this. Absolutely nothing, your clothing is also made of polyester, so swallowing a synthetic cotton ball is like dipping your T-shirt in orange juice and eating it."

As for Dr Ovidio Bermudez from the Eating Recovery Center in Denver, ingesting cotton balls can actually be lethal as it can obstruct the intestinal tract.

Master Cleanse Diet

This became one of the biggest trends in Southern California. Though hearing the word cleanse may sound promising, it's actually harmful to one's health. The cleanse involves drinking a mixture of lemons, maple syrup and pepper for 10 days, as per Karla Campbell, MS, RD.

In addition to the fruity mixture, the diet also requires the individual to drink a herbal laxative tea before going to bed and salt water the moment he/she wakes up. The cleanse diet's goal is to flush the GI tract and bowels, which can be harmful since it is not backed by studies.
