Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Tony Romo is planning to undergo offseason collarbone surgery to insert a plate that will further help his injuries. According to ESPN, Romo is scheduled to have a CT scan next week to determine if he is ready to have the procedure.

"I think we know which way we're siding and we've had exhaustive discussions about it. Really it's just about being there for your teammates. If I play, I know what I mean to our team. I just need to do everything in my power to make sure I'm on the football field," Romo said.

The 35-year-old quarterback has already suffered three broken collarbones since 2010, with the latest two happening this season. He was first injured back in the Sept. 20 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles that caused him to miss the next seven games.

Romo then suffered a hairline fracture in the same left clavicle after a hit during the Thanksgiving Day game against the Carolina Panthers. The Cowboys went 1-11 without Romo and the organization want to have his shoulder stronger as ever to avoid further collarbone injuries.

The quarterback started only in four games but was very effective as evidenced by his 3-1 record. The Cowboys are expecting six to eight weeks of recovery for Romo, in time for organized team activities to start next season.

In a report from NFL.com, Romo is confident that he will be able to play deep into his late 30s just like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. He also adds that he has been feeling good since his latest setback and can't wait to start preparing for next season.

However, the Cowboys still can't make the same mistake of having poor backup quarterbacks. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has revealed in previous interviews that the priority for the team is to have a decent backup just in case Romo goes down with injury again.

"It's obviously going to be a high priority for us, the backup situation, as it relates to not only being able to come in and do better than we did this year, but whatever way, whatever we do, do better, but we're looking to our future. That's as big a thing for me," Jones told 24/7 Sports.

Dallas Morning News reports that the Cowboys have the fourth overall pick in next year's draft and may be best suited in drafting a quarterback. Among the best possible picks for Dallas is California's Jared Goff and Memphis' Paxton Lynch.
