"MLB 14 The Show" is just days away from being released on the next-gen PlayStation 4 game console (May 6)  but some early reviews of the PS3 version have provided us with a glimpse into what to expect moving forward.

While the game does not seem to be surrounded by as much hype as NBA 2K14, it is still a crucial video game release because it marks the first time that we will see a baseball video game on a next-gen platform.

So far we've heard all about the new dynamic camera as well as the adjustments in gameplay to shorten pitch counts, but in a game review for The Telegram, Jon Mercer touched upon a new change in the way players are challenged by the difficulty level.

"The biggest of these twists is the implementation of a new "dynamic difficulty" system," Mercer writes. "Essentially, players start out in a simpler rookie setting, but are judged every half-inning of play based on the stats they accrue. And it is not simply a case of the game becoming more difficult, more like a case of a child discovering that they can swim deeper and deeper."

It is not entirely surprising to see the change in the way difficulty level is determined because other games have tried similar features. Another reason why this is not so surprising is because games are becoming more complex and sometimes come with a difficult learning curve. In this case, "MLB 14 The Show" gradually "unfurls its depth of gameplay," as Mercer writes, so that gamers are not too overwhelmed in the beginning stages of gameplay.
