The New York Knicks are in a good position to make a go for an Eastern Conference playoff spot but only if the team is really eyeing one.

The easy answer to that is of course a ‘Yes’ but at the inconsistent run of the Knicks, that goal may be up for debate.

Head coach Derek Fisher is being singled out as someone who may be downplaying that ticket, repeatedly stating that the Knicks are more focused on “the process”.

“The focus on the process is more important than the result,” Fisher said via the Daily News.

By saying that, Fisher is obviously referring to the rebuilding stage the Knicks are in. They have one element in place named Kristaps Porzingis but a previous one is being overlooked.

That previous piece is no other than Carmelo Anthony, who may not even be around if (and when) the actual rebuilding of the Knicks finally reaps its benefits.

The 31-year-old forward is doing his usual stuff of scoring but injuries have been preventing him from getting off the ground. He has expanded his game play by becoming a facilitator as well but the fact remains that there is still a lot of work to do for the ballclub.

Fisher managed to escape criticism last season with the team tanking, but the story could be different this season. Saying that his team doesn’t run plays will not help his cause.

“We don’t run plays,” Fisher added, straight-faced and serious in the same interview.

It could be one of two things. Either he is serious or is holding everything back for a reason. Does this mean the Knicks are not going to make a serious run for a playoff berth?

"There are not a lot of elite teams that are depending on rookies to carry the day, so we have to be reasonable about who we are and where we are and accept what is and not get caught up in what we should be and allow other people to define what our success is," he says via ESPN.

The Knicks have of course improved if one compares their record from last season. However, to improve further means to add more players to the mix.

The team has the available cap space to reel in more pawns to the fold, which will most likely be guards who can compliment Anthony and Porzingis.

When that time comes, would it be the end of the so-called “process” mantra that Fisher has been preaching? Hopefully!
