The Denver Broncos defense was simply amazing all year long, and they delivered a Super Bowl victory in the final game of the season. Their incredible performance this year has many NFL experts debating where exactly they should be ranked when compared to some of the all-time great defensive units in NFL history.

This is a tough one. The usuals such as the 1985 Chicago Bears, 2000 Baltimore Ravens, 1972 Miami Dolphins and even the 2013 Seattle Seahawks will always be in the mix.

This Broncos unit deserves to be mentioned with the best of the best because of their versatility and balance. The Broncos had a great all around defense from top to bottom. Elite linebackers, a great defensive line and a fantastic secondary created one unbreakable force, and it showed off in Super Bowl 50. The Carolina Panthers were the highest scoring offense in the league this season, but the Broncos allowed just one touchdown against them in the big game, and a mind-blowing three total points in the second half. Cam Newton was held to a horrendous 18-43 passing, and he didn't score a single touchdown all game.

What the Broncos did in the Super Bowl is what they've been doing all year long. Thanks to Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware, the Broncos led the NFL in sacks this season, terrorizing quarterbacks week after week. Many fans thought Newton's mobility would be able escape the Broncos pass rush, but that clearly was not the case. Wade Phillips' defensive game plan was perfect. Opposing teams tried everything this year from double teams to running back and tight end help, but nothing was able to stop this Broncos pass rush.

What elevates this Broncos defense from elite to all-time great is their secondary. Even if a quarterback finally does have time to make a thrown, it won't matter because their wide receivers and tight ends won't be open. Just ask Greg Olsen, who was completely erased from that game. Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward and Chris Harris combined to create the No. 1 pass defense in the NFL this season as far as yards allowed, and their secondary allowed the third fewest passing touchdowns. Overall, the Broncos ranked first in total yards against.

This marked the first time in franchise history that the Broncos defense ranked No. 1 in yards allowed.

Not once this entire season did the Broncos defense allow 400 yards in a game. In all 19 games that the Broncos played, their opponents couldn't hit the 400-mark, which is absolutely incredible in this day of the NFL. The greatest defenses ever will always be measured by how they perform in the postseason, and this Broncos defense played their best in the biggest moments. In their three postseason games the Broncos never once gave up even 20 points. Not to mention turnovers. The Broncos forced seven turnovers in their three playoff games including four in the Super Bowl.

That's when you've got to ask whhether or not there is even a weakness in the Broncos defense. While they may not be the single greatest defensive team in NFL history, you could definitely make the case that we just witnessed a top 10 defense in the Super Bowl era.
