Former WWE superstar and UFC newcomer Phil Brooks, also known as CM Punk, just can't catch a break. Days after confirming that he will face Mickey Gall in his Octagon debut, Punk will undergo back surgery to repair a herniated disc, per MMA Fighting.

The 37-year-old MMA rookie revealed that his back injury was from his previous stint with the WWE that has been lingering for some time, but it got worst. "My back has always bugged me. Figured it was just wrestling s***. Turns out it was," Punk said.

"It got bad enough to the point where I couldn't do anything the week before I went to train with the New Jersey Devils last month. One day I could manage, the next day I couldn't. I've been in agony for almost a month. Chiropractor, acupuncture, massage, cryotherapy, nothing worked," he added.

The Chicago-native remains positive about his latest setback, saying that it's just a bump in the road to his MMA dream. Back in 2015, he suffered an injury to his shoulder that delayed his development but continued training under Duke Roufus of Roufusports in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Punk is expected to make a full recovery after four to six weeks with his debut falling possibly at UFC 200. The surgery is considered to be minor. It was the same surgery that Cain Velasquez had before he backed out of his fight with Fabricio Werdum in late January.

The former WWE champion recently told the Associated Press that he was hoping to have his first MMA fight at the biggest event in UFC history this coming July. "There's part of me that cares because UFC 200 is going to be a big deal. I've spoken to Dana about it, trying to figure out what's best for both parties. It's just a smarter business decision," Punk admitted.

His debut opponent commented on Brooks' injury and said that their fight is still on. Gall wrote on Twitter, "It's all good. The fight is still on. Minor surgery. I wish CM Punk a healthy and speedy recovery. I want you at 100 [percent]."

The 23-year-old New Jersey native won his UFC debut with an impressive first round submission win over Michael Jackson at UFC Fight Night 82. According to Best Fight Odds, Punk is currently the +230 underdog against Gall heading into their fight sometime in 2016.
