Sony Pictures Entertainment has confirmed the release date of "Pixels," an Adam Sandler movie, to be May 15, 2015 according to Eurogamer. Timothy Dowling and Tim Herlihy wrote the script for this science fiction adventure film with Chris Columbus as director. The movie is based on One Film Production 'Pixels,' a short gaming-themed film directed by Patrick Jean. Shown in 2010, the short film has Donkey Kong, PacMan and Frogger in cameo appearances.

According to Joystiq, the movie tells the story of four video game champs employed by the U.S. government to stop attacking aliens who resemble video game characters currently laying waste to New York City. Video feeds of classic arcade games were misread by these aliens as a declaration of war against them, and they use the games as models for their assault.

The production for "Pixels" is set to start this May in Toronto. Upon release in 2015, it will be competing with "Mad Max: Fury Road" from Warner Bros. and the comedy "Pitch Perfect 2" from Universal.

The film is co-produced by Adam Sandler and Allen Covert of Happy Madison together with Mark Radcliffe and Michael Barnathan of 1492 Pictures and several others. Adam Sandler also leads the cast as Julius Brenner, one of the four video game champs. Aside from being an actor and comedian, Sandler is also acting as writer and producer in collaboration with others. His first role was in "The Cosby Show." He went on to become a regular on "Saturday Night Live," which was followed by a series of Hollywood films that were all box office hits that earned more than $100M, including "Happy Gilmore," "Big Daddy," "Billy Madison," "The Waterboy," and "Mr. Deeds." He also starred in some dramatic films. He founded Happy Madison, a film and TV production company, in 1990.

The other cast of "Pixels" includes: Kevin James as the President; Josh Gad as the socially self-conscious intellectual who has several conspiracy theories; Michelle Monaghan; and Peter Dinklage.
