Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao just placed himself in a deep hole recently when he touched a very sensitive matter involving same-sex marriages.

A video spotted on Facebook surfaced showing Pacquiao referring to people engaged in same-sex marriages "are worse than animals."

“Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals,” said Pacquiao as transcribed by The Guardian.

Pacquiao’s remarks drew huge backlash from social media and popular personalities on the topic. That included people like local TV host and movie figure Vice Ganda of "Showtime" and singer Aiza Seguerra.

Pacquiao later on apologized for the gay slur but maintained that he was simply standing on what he believes.

I'm sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I've hurt. I still stand on my belief that I'm against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I'm not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I'm praying for you.

“I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desire of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the Bible says,” captioned Pacquiao on his Instagram account.

With his current row, local folks believe that his comments could end up hurting his chances in the Philippines’ upcoming national elections. Pacquiao is running for a senatorial seat where he was seen of easily making it to the magic 12.

But all that was before the recent LGBT controversy exploded, calling to mind a similar situation that heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury made not long ago regarding homosexuality, per The Guardian.

It didn’t take long for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to get word of Pacquiao’s comments, where he issued a statement of his own regarding gay couples. "We should let people live their lives the way they want to live their lives. To each his own," Mayweather said via TMZ.

There is one person though that feels that Pacquiao is still being treated kindly on the issue. Leonard Ellerbe, CEO for Mayweather Promotions, believes that the uproar could have been worse if Floyd Jr. was the one who issues such comments.

With the mess he created for himself, Pacquiao will likely find it tough from here on. It remains to be seen if such will also affect his chances of booking a senate seat as he is likely to lose some votes for that slur.

Pacquiao is set to fight his last match this April 9 against Timothy Bradley Jr., which hopefully will calm the current storm that he brought to himself.
