The new SteamVR performance test program by Valve provided a short clip of the Aperture Robot Repair demo inspired by “Portal.”

The Performance Analysis

The application was used to analyze the CPU, GPU and OS performance of a system over the course of minutes. Afterwards, a user report was provided, giving details on the performance of each component compared to the recommended Viva technical specifications that were released recently.

ValveTime and SteamDB used the code of an older model of the performance test to acquire different kinds of materials from Valve’s previous trials involving VR technology. None of the recently acquired items confirm that there are games currently in development. Some gamers, however, speculate that there are actually new games being created using the new engine. Overall, it is still interesting to note a number of familiar characters being enhanced in the new Source 2 engine by Valve.

The program was only made available to the public for a limited period on the Steam Store. It was removed shortly.

Based on the video, the SteamVR performance test was operating on Valve’s new Source 2 engine set in a shortened version of the Aperture Robot Repair demo. This had fixed camera angles, lower visual fidelity, zero interactivity, no sound effects and only a few of the main animated sequences. The arrival of GLaDOS and the drawers opening were also featured with small people within, who are apparently scared of the user.

There were also videos showcasing a spaceship demo and a test map themed after “Left 4 Dead.” There was another one patterned after “Portal,” where Atlas repeatedly dies, and a level that seemed to have been made to shoot headcrabs.

Code Strings and Game Files

There were also common code strings that hinted the probability of some games in development, although these can also mean nothing until an official confirmation is made. Other code strings featured Ken Birdwell’s Timer, a Cockpit demo, the Valve headquarters, room extender, Emily test demo room, Defend Castle, Dota 2 “The International” Stage and Bendy’s Apartment. The blog also discovered an early version of the “Smooth Jazz” song on “Portal 2,” which is actually “Together Again” by Dave Koz. There are other textures provided throughout the game files, with a few having actual uses.

More updates and details on the Steam VR performance test are expected soon.
