J.J. Abrams lit the world on fire earlier this week when he made a comment during an interview with Chris Rock. His comment of course regarded the identity of Rey's parents in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the one answer the entire world is awaiting.

Abram's comments? That they were not in Episode VII.

He would later retract that comment, clarifying, "What I meant was that she doesn't discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world."

This of course is a far cry from his first statement. The action however is more telling than the substance of his comments.

Abrams Comment Supports Major Theory

The simple fact that Abrams went to the trouble of clarifying his previous statement is either more play on his part to keep fans in a daze or a need to fix a mistake he had made earlier so as to not mislead.

More importantly, by backtracking the way he does, the director seems to support the notion that Rey's parents are in fact in the new movie. This also serves to back up the most popular theory of all -- that she is Luke's daughter.

That theory is the one that makes the most sense for a number of reasons. Maz Kanata goes to great lengths to connect Rey with Anakin and Luke through the lightsaber during one scene they have together, noting how the saber calls to her. During the climactic battle, the saber goes to her instead of Kylo Ren, further supporting the notion that it belongs with her. Throw in their similar origins (which also match up with Anakin's).

And of course at the end of the film, she is the one sent to find the legendary Jedi. We never know why, but it is very telling that after searching for her brother for an entire movie, Leia opts to send this random girl to go meet up with a Jedi whose fate will affect the galaxy.

Of course that will not be answered until either Episode VIII or IX which are due out in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

What do you think of Abrams' comments? Do they support the idea that Luke is Rey's father?
