Ted Cruz has stretched his Indiana primary lead to double-digits over Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

With just hours remaining before Tuesday's, May 3, 2016 showdown, a new Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics poll finds the Texas senator up 16 points, 45 percent to 29 percent over Trump. Ohio Gov. John Kasich brings up the rear at just 13 percent.

Polls Have Been up and Down

"This is good news for Cruz, but the volatility of the electorate means all campaigns should view these results cautiously," said pollster Andrew Downs.

Indeed, a recent RealClearPolitics average of polls found Trump topping Cruz by an average of five points.

Another factor potentially affecting the outcome could be Kasich's recent announcement proclaiming that he has no plans of campaigning in the Hoosier State based on an agreement staffers reached with the Cruz campaign to stop Trump from winning enough delegates to clinch the nomination outright prior to July's GOP convention in Cleveland.

Also weighing in Cruz's favor could be the recent endorsement handed to him by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

"I'm not against anybody, but I will be voting for Ted Cruz in the upcoming Republican primary," he said in a speech where he also commended Trump for giving "voice to the frustration of millions of working Americans."

Cruz also recently gained attention by tabbing Carly Fiorina as his running mate should he secure the nomination.

"After a great deal of consideration and prayer, I have come to the conclusion that if I am nominated to be president of the United States that I will run on a ticket with my vice presidential nominee Carly Fiorina," Cruz said during a rally in Indianapolis.

Trump, Clinton Leading in California

Meanwhile, a pair of recent polls also found Trump and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton both holding comfortable leads in the upcoming June 7, California primaries.

With 546 Democratic delegates at stake, a Gravis Marketing survey finds Clinton leading Sanders 47 percent to 41 percent in the Golden State.

On the Republican side, A Capitol Weekly/Sextant Strategies poll found Trump leading Cruz 41 percent to 23 percent with Kasich stuck at 21 percent.
