Every year, Google chooses an Android device manufacturer (or two) to create a Nexus device (or two), which become the standard bearer of the new Android operating system, running the latest version of Android right out of the box on their release date.

For 2016, it appears that Google may have chosen struggling Taiwanese Android manufacturer HTC to create both 2016 Nexus devices, which will likely be released in the fall running the new Android N operating system.

The rumored selection of HTC, along with possible model numbers and codenames, comes from a recent leak through well-known Android leaker @evleaks, via Android Police.

Whatever the full name may be of the Android N operating system running on the next Nexus devices, it seems likely the rumored HTC handsets are being designated as the Nexus S1 and Nexus M1.

Google codenames its Nexus devices based on names of various aquatic creatures -- the current Nexus devices from 2015 were originally called Bullhead and Angler.

And so Android Police's best guess for the codenames (with an 8 out of 10 confidence level!) is that they're being called Marlin and Sailfish. Manta Ray and Swordfish would have been so much cooler.

Not much else is rumored yet about the possible Nexus devices, other than it will probably be using Qualcomm chips (not surprising) due to a senior engineer at the company referencing the codename in a code review tool about a month ago.

But having model numbers, a single manufacturer for both devices, and the possible codenames to go off of is a pretty good start.

And since we haven't even entered the summer yet, the Nexus rumor mill is only getting started. So be sure to check back with Latin Post Tech for more reports on what may be on the way in 2016's Nexus devices.
