The 2013 Summer movie season set an all-time record at the box office, netting studios close to $5 billion in profits. But that number was marred by high-profile flops including the notorious Johnny Depp vehicle "The Lone Ranger."

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2's" impressive $92 million opening weekend certainly started the 2014 season off on the right foot. It may be even safe to say that Brit Andrew Garfield has officially stepped out of former web slinger Tobey Maquire's shadow.

The rest of this year's crop of summer movies looks equally strong. Highlighted by reboots ("Godzilla"), sequels (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and live-action adaptations ("Maleficient"), Hollywood is betting big on established franchises and it doesn't hurt to mention that a lot of these films look really, really good.

Let's start with what may very well be the highest grossing movie of the year, both at the domestic and international box offices. That would be "Godzilla," or Gojira for all your hardcore fans out there. The Godzilla teaser trailer was posted online on Dec. 10, 2013 and it was a great surprise.

After the campiness that was Roland Emmerich's 1998 version a serious effort at portraying the beastly creature on the big screen was well worth the wait. Co-starring Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" fame and featuring an amazing military skydiving sequence, this film looks like it's going to be high-octane from start to finish.

Not to be outdone Michael Bay's lucrative and insanely entertaining "Transformers" franchise is gunning for B.O. gold. The series makes its return on June 27 with "Transformers: Age of Extinction." The fourth film in the series has a different cast. Mark Wahlberg replaces Shia LeBeouf as the lead actor. Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley isn't going to be in the film either after only starring in the third film.

Changing gears a bit, "Sleeping Beauty" spinoff "Maleficent" substitutes gigantic monsters and robots for sorcery. It's yet to be seen if Disney's audience flocks to see this darker, scarier flick. But irregardless of the film's tone, its commercial prospects will probably be bolstered by Angelina Jolie's performance. Judging by the trailers it looks like the stunning mother of eight went all out for this role. "Maleficent" comes out on May 30.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" enters in multiplexes nationwide on July 11 and, judging by the commercial and critical successor of its predecessor "Rise," it will perform well. James Franco won't in this sequel, but perennial Oscar nominee Gary Oldman will have no trouble filling in.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is sure to be another can't miss blockbuster. The lean cast will provide plenty of eye candy for both guys and girls, though everyone will likely be going gaga over Jennifer Lawrence's 'Mystique.'
