Update - August 10, 2016 - 9:37 a.m. :  Michael Phelps wins 200-meter butterfly and recaptures the Gold medal after he lost it to Chad Le Clos in London 2012. Phelps later that night helps Team USA land another gold for the 4x200m free-style relay. Phelps now further cements his legacy with 21 gold medals won throughout his Olympic career. Today, the Olympian continues his quest for his next gold medal as he competes in the 200-meter individual medley event.

Michael Phelps' quest for renewed and elongated immortality has started anew and the schedule for his next races are provided down below. The most decorated Olympic athlete in history expanded upon his legacy by leading the U.S. swim team to a 4 X 100 relay gold medal in the Rio Olympics and posting the fastest split of his career.

Swimming second on his four man team, the 31-year-old Phelps propelled the Americans to a lead they never relinquished and gave even more life to predictions that he could walk away from these games with an additional six gold medals for his trophy case.

Vintage Phelps

"Michael usually works this way," longtime coach Bob Bowman said of the man who now owns 19 gold medals and is competing in his fifth Olympics. "When one thing is good, everything is pretty good. It doesn't usually work in parts. So I feel pretty good now."

Phelps returns to the pool on Monday to compete in the preliminaries of the 200-meter butterfly, an event he has more incentive to perform well in than most after South Africa's Chad le Clos denied him of gold in that event at the 2012 London Games.

Phelps will also compete in the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley, as well as two more relays.

"I hope that's a good sign," he said of posting the fastest relay split of his career. "I guess we'll see over the next couple of days. But I'm very pleased with the start."

What seems clear is Phelps' seems to have peaked at just the right time.

Phelps Poised

"He's in a good place now," Bowman added. "Everything I've asked him to do, he's been really good at, way better than before trials."

Phelps is also set to compete in the 100- and 200m butterfly, the 200m individual medley and the 4x200m freestyle relay and the 4x100 medley relay.

Phelps could also be poised to compete in the 200m butterfly semifinals, depending on how he fares in the prelims. You can watch all the action on NBC and view a live stream by visiting Rio2016.com .
