Bosnia and Herzegovina has selected "Death in Sarajevo" to represent the country at the Academy Awards. The film was directed by the celebrated auteur Danis Tanović and premiered earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Bear) and the FIPRESCI award. The film now heads to the Toronto Film Festival where it should obtain U.S distribution.

"Death in Sarajevo" represents the fourth time Bosnia submits a film by Tanovic. The director's film "No Man's Land" took home the Oscar for the country back in 2001 and his 2013 film "An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker" made the January shortlist. His film "Cirkus Columbia" was also submitted by Bosnia back in 2010.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has been submitting films since 1994. However, the country has only been nominated once and that was in 2001 when it took home the Oscar. Last year the country submitted "Our Everyday Life." That film premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival but never obtained worldwide exposure.

Every year countries around the world submit films to compete in the Foreign Language category. This year 12 countries have already submitted films and "Death in Sarajevo" will compete against numerous festival favorites. Among the films already selected this year include Venezuela's Golden Lion winner "From Afar" and Germany's critical darling "Toni Erdmann". Other films that have been submitted include Switzerland's "My Life as a Courgette" and Romania's Cannes Competition film "Sieranevada."

The deadline for the foreign language category is Oct. 3 with the Academy announcing a list of eligible films later that month. On Jan. 17 the Academy will announce the nine finalists from among the eligible films and on Jan. 24 nominations will be announced. The winner will be announced at the Oscar ceremony on Feb. 26, 2017.
