Gigi Hadid and boyfriend Zayn Malik are one of Hollywood's most popular couples of 2016. The two famously co-starred on Malik's music video for his hit single "PILLOWTALK". Despite all the chemistry they've shared on and off screen, it seems Gigi doesn't know where her boyfriend actually came from.

"I especially love it when you meet other Arabs," says Gigi, "There's such a sense of family regardless of whether you are blood related or not anywhere in the world. When someone comes up to me and they tell me, 'I'm Palestinian' and we make a connection, it's beautiful. My boyfriend is also half Middle Eastern. It's just a connection that you make that's really cool. It's hard to explain but you feel like you're amongst [your] people."

According to Perez Hilton, Gigi said this in an interview while on a business trip in Dubai, promoting her collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger.

Many fans have taken to Twitter to call out Gigi for her mistake, pointing out that Zayn is indeed, half-Pakistani, making him of South Asian descent. Some attacks got personal, and could give Gigi a hard time letting this news die down.

"@GiGiHadid just to let you know Zayn is Pakistani, which is in South Asia. Just in case you didn't read his profile properly before signing," said Twitter user @ShadowhuntZarry.

Instead of going down the negative route and responding to public backlash, Gigi chose to congratulate her boyfriend for being listed among this year's nominees at the American Music Awards, according to Mail Online.

"YES BABY!!!!!!! @zaynmalik @AMAs," Gigi posted on her Twitter account.

Zayn will compete with Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers, DNCE and Shawn Mendes for the New Artist of the Year Award following the release of debut album Mind of Mine in March.
