After an explosive season filled with twists, turns, doppelgangers and the infamous Katherine takeover, Season 5 of "The Vampire Dairies" will finally come to an end on Thursday with a dynamic and gut-wrenching finale.

In the last episode, while Stefan and Elena tried to find their way back to Mystic Falls, Damon trapped Markos in the Savatore mansion. Markos told Damon that there was nothing that he could do to stop him and The Travelers from conquering Mystic Falls now that he drained almost all of Stefan and Elena's doppelgänger blood for the spell to stop the magic in the town. Plus, the spell was already in effect and began taking the magic away. As a result, Liv and Luke lost their powers and all the vampires lost their daylight rings.

Bonnie also admitted to Caroline the dark fate of the Other Side and to everyone's shock, Julian tragically killed Stefan, reports Hollywood Life.

In the upcoming episode, entitled "Home," the Travelers will continue their quest to destroy magic in Mystic Falls, which, in turn, would lead to the collapse of the Other Side. Damon, however, will not take Stefan's death very well and comes up with a plan to destroy The Travelers by blowing up Mystic Falls.

A trailer for the episode reveals that Damon convinces Elena to help him to blow up Mystic Falls and the two are seen driving Damon's car into the Mystic Grill to set off the gas line underneath the town. It's unclear if Damon and Elena will survive the head on collision.

Executive producer Caroline Dries also hinted that three more characters will die before the end of Season 5, reports TV Guide. When asked if there will be permanent deaths, the EP replied, "I can think of three, off-hand."

Actor Paul Wesley also gave hints about what to expect in the finale. "[The finale] definitely establishes new parameters in the environment we'll be shooting in Season 6," he said, according to TV Guide. "They reset things in a way, and the writers have the ability to now change the circumstances and locations of where the show takes place."

According to CarterMatt.com, the synopsis for the season finale states:

"Heartbroken by an unexpected tragedy, Damon is focused on holding himself together, while pushing Bonnie harder than ever to find a way to stop the disintegration of the Other Side. Elena takes matters into her own hands and demands that Liv and Luke help her, but Liv refuses to cooperate until Caroline provides her with some personal motivation. Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) is horrified when Markos uses violence against Tyler/Julian to prove that Mystic Falls is now under the control of the Travelers. With new information from Sheriff Forbes, Damon comes up with a dangerous plan that relies on split-second timing from Jeremy and Matt. Liv's off-hand remark regarding Stefan gets a surprisingly emotional response from Caroline. As conditions on the Other Side worsen, Bonnie takes the opportunity to settle an old score. Finally, Damon's plan causes a massive explosion in Mystic Falls, and everyone is caught up in the confusion, leaving a trail of heroism, sacrifice, relief and despair."

"The Vampire Diaries" S5E22, "Home," airs on the CW on Thursday, May 15 at 8 p.m. EDT.
