For more than three decades since "Star Wars" incepted the theaters, the franchise continues to dominate the box office with its latest installment last year, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." As it continues to captivate the audiences, movie-goers and the films industry alike have but one wish for the blockbuster franchise, that is the diversity of faces, both in front and behind the camera.

Although the creatives and heads of the iconic space opera franchise had efforts to make the each of its film more inclusive in terms of race and gender, it remains a fact that the all the earlier installments and even the slated ones are and will be directed by white men. In an interview with Variety, female directors were given a glimpse of hope when Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy said that she has intentions to have a woman to direct another installment of "Star Wars."

The publication further reported that finding a woman director for the next films of "Star Wars" is a priority to Kennedy. There is, however, a qualification that was not fully detailed on.

"We want to make sure that when we bring a female director in to do "Star Wars," they're set up for success," says Kennedy. "We want to really start to focus in on people we would love to work with and see what kinds of things they're doing to progress up to that ladder now, and then pull them in when the time is right."

How to know when the time is right? No further details, however, were offered.

Despite this promising statement, all next three "Star Wars" installments are slated to be directed by Rian Johnson, Chris Miller, Phil Lord, and Colin Trevorrow. Polygon further noted that the earliest date that a woman could direct a "Star Wars" movie is on 2020.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," on the other hand, is directed by Godzilla's Gareth Edwards and is scheduled to hit theaters this December 16. Stay tuned for more exciting updates!
