Like many would suspect, or at least hope, the Pentagon and the U.S. government have emergency responses already planned out for natural disasters and attacks on the home front.

However, surprisingly, the U.S. military also has an elaborate response planned in the event that a zombie apocalypse actually happens on U.S. soil and throughout the world, CNN reported.

According to an unclassified Defense Department document titled "CONOP 8888," the U.S. Strategic Command used a zombie apocalypse scenario as a training template.

Navy Capt. Pamela Kunze, a U.S. Strategic Command spokeswoman, told CNN the scenario was for students to learn basic military operations in a fictional setting.

"The document is identified as a training tool used in an in-house training exercise where students learn about the basic concepts of military plans and order development through a fictional training scenario," she said. "This document is not a U.S. Strategic Command plan."

In the case that the Earth's dead rise up and begin invading cities and town as they munch on human flesh, the document is quite thorough and features a wide variety of scenarios in which a zombie would attack.

The document stated that all types of zombie threats should be planned for.

The walking dead "created via some form of occult experimentation in what might otherwise be referred to as 'evil magic,' to vegetarian zombies that pose no threat to humans due to their exclusive consumption of vegetation, to zombie life forms created after an organism is infected with a high dose of radiation are among the invaders the document outlines."

The document outlines operations that include zombie awareness training, military deployment, hospitals overrun by zombies, public safety and restoring civil authority after the threat is neutralized, CNN reported.

It also states that all hits and attacks should be aimed at the zombie's head and to burn them after they have been knocked out.

"The only assumed way to effectively cause casualties to the zombie ranks by tactical forces is the concentration of all firepower to the head, specifically the brain," according to the document. "The only way to ensure a zombie is 'dead' is to burn the zombie corpse."

According to CNN, the officials chose to use zombies for training because it is a bizarre premise and an implausible scenario.

"Training examples for plans must accommodate the political fallout that occurs if the general public mistakenly believes that a fictional training scenario is actually a real plan,' the document states. "Rather than risk such an outcome by teaching our augmentees using the fictional 'Tunisia' or 'Nigeria' scenarios used at (Joint Combined Warfighting School), we elected to use a completely impossible scenario that could never be mistaken as a real plan."
