Costa Rica has been dealt a huge blow as Everton announced that Bryan Oviedo may have broken his leg.

The Costa Rica national is one of the team's top players and the nation was hoping that he might help the team in what many consider one of the toughest groups in the entire tournament.

"It was a real negative today, an unfortunate incident. We end up with Bryan picking up a bad injury," said Everton boss Roberto Martinez about Oviedo's injury, according to ESPN. "We need to give him as much support as we can.

"He's had a terrific season," Martinez added. "I've been so impressed with his level, that he can play in different positions. He's a really important player in the group. We want to make sure everything goes well because he deserves it.

"The incident with Bryan affected everyone. Those injuries give you a bad taste, but it was a very professional performance from our point of view."

The 23-year-old has two goals and two assists for Everton this season as a defender.

Costa Rica is the unfortunate denizen of a group that features three other former World Cup champions. The team opens its tournament against Uruguay on June 14 before taking on Italy six days later. The final game for Costa Rica is a June 24 matchup against England.

Many expect Costa Rica to finish at the bottom of the group and the loss of Oviedo would give the team fewer options on defense.
