Princess Diana had only a few outfits when she became princess; it was said that she had to borrow clothes from her friends to be worn during special occasions. But a special exhibit at Kensington Palace called "Diana: Her Fashion Story" will unveil how the bashful princess developed her own fashion sense through the years and how she used fashion to connect with people that she helped.

A special highlight of the exhibit which will start on February 24 is a collection of 25 iconic clothes that she has worn during special moments of her life. Curator of the exhibit also explains why the princess refused to wear gloves and broke protocol by not wearing hats.

Eleri Lynn, curator of the exhibit said that the collection basically showed how Diana became a self-confident and stylish woman, People reported. One of the exhibits included Diana's tweed suit by Bill Pashley worn during her honeymoon in Scotland in 1981. A photo of her wearing the suit will be on display; she was standing alongside a smitten Prince Charles who was kissing hand. The first in line to the British throne wore a traditional Scottish kilt with full accessories.

One of the most heartwarming stories regarding Diana's fashion evolution was her refusal to wear gloves and hats. Most British women can't be seen in public without a hat, especially during formal occasions. Diana broke protocol by not wearing these accessories because she simply cannot connect with people while wearing them.

Princess Diana wore a favorite bright floral dress when she visits children at the hospital, Pink News reported. She also wore chunky jewelry so that children will be able to play with them. The princess said that she can never cuddle a child if she was in a hat nor could she shake hands and hold patients when she wore gloves. This favorite floral dress was also worn when she visited a hospital and a shelter in Sao Paulo; many of the children at the shelter suffered from AIDS.

And possibly the most amazing part of the exhibit was Diana's "Elvis dress" by Catherine Walker. This dress had a distinctive collar designed from the likeness of Elvis Presley's jumpsuit. Lynn said that it was very expensive because it was covered with 20,000 pearls. Diana wore the dress with her tiara as she presented the British designer of the year award in Hong Kong.

"Diana: Her Fashion Story" exhibit celebrates the princess' 20th death anniversary.
