The second grand slam championship is underway in the tennis world at the French Open. The French Open is one of the four major tennis tournaments of the year and is played by the best tennis players from across the globe. The favorite to win this year's French Open was Serena Williams, who won it last year against Maria Sharapova in straight sets.

But Williams had an early exit this year when she was upset by Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round. Most people are very familiar with Williams because of her prolific and accomplished career and her media appearances. In her career, Serena Williams has won 17 singles grand slam titles.

So who is Muguruza? Who is the woman who dethroned the best female tennis player in the world and the defending champion?

Garbiñe Muguruza was born in the capital city of Caracas, Venezuela, in 1993. That's right: She's only 20 years old, and she has advanced to the third round of the French Open Championship. Although Venezuelan born, she represents Spain as her native country during match play because that's where her father is from. She began playing tennis at the young age of three with her brothers, and ironically her favorite female tennis player growing up was Serena Williams. Her favorite male tennis player is Pete Sampras.

According to the WTA tennis rankings, she is currently ranked No. 35 among singles players. Considering she is only 20 years old and has only been a professional since 2011, she is on a good path. Muguruza has never won a grand slam title in her young career, but she has competed in all four events.

Muguruza has said that she enjoys cooking, dogs, reading, and listening to music.

What was so surprising about Muguruza's victory at the French Open over Serna Williams was she didn't just win: She dominated Williams in straight sets. The match lasted barely over one hour, and Muguruza defeated Williams 6-2 and 6-2 yet again. Muguruza is also very active on social media with a Facebook page and her Twitter account, @GarbiMuguruza, which has more than 17,000 followers if you would like to see what she is tweeting.

It's going to be a tough road to the top for Muguruza if she is going to advance to the top of the mountain and win the 2014 French Open. There's still a lot of great competition remaining, but it looks as if she is up for the challenge.
