Sgt. Jessica Gamboa miraculously survived a brutal bear attack while she was out jogging in a deserted area at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska earlier this month.

After coming across a bear cub, Gamboa says "Immediately my thought was, 'OK, where's the mama bear?'"

Moments later, the 25-year-old wife and mother says the mother bear charged at her, knocking her down, before picking her up and throwing her to the ground, while pummeling her with her powerful paws.

Gamboa says that she played dead during the attack on May 18, and eventually the mother bear left.

"I played dead," she said, in a video interview released by the Army, reports ABC News. "I just completely surrendered."

Afterward, Gamboa was left severely injured and all alone, suffering from lacerations to her neck, arms and legs, a torn ear and neck fractures. However, she said thoughts about her young son motivated her to fight for her life.

"I felt completely like I was beaten half to death," she said, according to USA Today.

"I have a baby boy, a 4-year-old son at home. ... He's all I wanted to live for," she said.

She began calling out for her husband, who was also running at the base, but got no response. Then she prayed for strength, and finally, a truck driven by an Army medic, Sgt. Collin Gillikin, appeared out of nowhere.

"I wasn't a man of faith but it kind of made me think there really is something bigger than myself out there," Gillikin said.

Doctors say Gamboa, who was released from the hospital Thursday, will make a full recovery.

"I actually can't even believe this actually really happened," she said. "It seems still surreal, just for the fact that I'm still alive -- seems unreal. "
