Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" will be a bit greener than previous seasons.

During an interview with the AMC blog this week, "The Walking Dead" producer Jolly Dale discussed the show's environmental efforts. According to Dale, the show tries to "build on what we established the year before," making every season just that more eco-friendly.

"During Season 2, we tried to address how much paper we were using and encouraged people only to print when they had to, or to print on double-sided paper, or to use an electronic device to retrieve their information," she said. "So, we started there and then really got into the recycling efforts. It's a challenge."

In Season 4, the prison garden was made with the help of a composter and "The Walking Dead" cast and crew's breakfasts and lunches.

"This year, we're expanding our effort so we're composting all the time, even when we're on location," Dale said. "We had compost at the end of the season that we used in our prison garden last year. They were flowering fruits and vegetables all over the interior of the prison, so we're using it all the way through its cycle. This year, we have our own garden for the crew, and we hope we'll make some zombie salsa here when the tomatoes ripen."

Getting a bunch of zombies to recycle isn't always easy however.

"There are people who don't understand, I think, all the reasons why recycling is such a good idea," Hale said. "We try to make it as attractive ... and as easy as possible to do it. But sometimes people just don't want to do it. To that end, we've tried to have a 'green' representative from each department to be the cheerleader."

Besides going greener, Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, said Season 5 has seen some more positive changes.

"It's amazing what I'm witnessing, what we're getting done, and what I'm seeing my colleagues accomplish," she told GoldDerby. "It's kind of mind-blowing. ... People will not be disappointed."

Dale also confirmed what executive producers Denise Huth, Robert Kirkman and Gale Anne Hurd have teased: Episode 1 of Season 5 will start the season off with a fast-paced bang and is one of the things the crew is most excited about.

"The premiere episode is by far the biggest episode that we've ever done," Dale said. "So getting it all together to make it come off as good as we want has been a huge task, but it's going to be amazing."

Greg Nicotero directed the episode and described it as the "most challenging" and like a "mini movie."

"Readers of the comic book will have a pretty good idea of which direction we're going in," Dale said. "The way I see it is we've killed a lot of beloved characters on the show, but that just opens it up for new storylines to come along. So don't be too sad about all the people who died in Season 4 because there will be way more characters to come."

Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" begins in October.
