In a bid to put up needed funds, this year's San Diego Comic-Con will be dubbed the 'Comic-Con Special Edition' and will be held on November 26-28 at the San Diego Convention Center, but as early as now, it is already slated.

The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled different sectors, including the entertainment industry. The live events business, such as the lucrative comic convention industry, is one among industries that received a major blow. In order to raise sufficient funds, the organization will be hosting a smaller version of the annual summer event 'San Diego Comic-Con' in November.

'Comic-Con Special Edition'

According to CNBC, the organization announced the 'Special Edition' decision late Saturday night. But after placing the in-person convention over the Thanksgiving weekend, the organization received harsh backlash from talents, fans, and even the press.

Following the announcement, the author of "Light of the Jedi" and Daredevil comics, Charles Soule, immediately took his dismay to Twitter. He tweeted cannot believe that the organization scheduled the San Diego Comic-Con on the same weekend as the first chance in two years that most families will be celebrating Thanksgiving together. He even mentioned that he will see fans in 2022.

Having the same sentiment with Soule, comic fans across the United States questioned the organization's choice to put the sought-after event on the major holiday in the U.S.

Also, some of them expressed that they do not want to miss the 'special edition' prepared by the organization, but some of them were not even able to celebrate Thanksgiving last year together with their families because of COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns. Fans of the comic industry not only include usual comic enthusiasts as they were also joined by journalists and industry professionals who are tasked with covering the event, CBS8 reported.

In the past, the conventions have coincided with holidays like the WonderCon, which took place on Easter weekend, and the Anime Expo, which usually takes place over the Fourth of July. But the hosting San Diego Comic-Con on Thanksgiving raised the eyebrows of fans and critics.

Moreover, an Eisner award-winning comic book writer, Dan Slott, also tweeted that last year their family missed the Thanksgiving celebration due to the pandemic and because all of them will be vaccinated, and there will be no chance that an event will be hindering their family gathering during the holidays. Slott also added that even everything would be back to normal, he thinks that fans will not feel differently about the schedule.

But reports mentioned that the decision of the organization to host the in-person convention on Thanksgiving weekend was because of the previously canceled events, which resulted in a significant financial hit. David Glanzer, the nonprofit organization's spokesperson, mentioned in a statement on Saturday that they were greatly impacted by the pandemic, and the organization is hoping that the event will shore up its financial reserves and will serve as a booster for larger in-person gatherings in 2022, Variety reported.

The San Diego Comic-Con has become a huge event for the entertainment industry as it became an avenue for studios to launch their blockbuster projects, as it can reach right away from their target audience.
