Nury Martinez, President of the Los Angeles City Council, and other city leaders are on fire after an audio recording with racist remarks leaked Sunday.

The most offensive comments were made by Martinez, who appeared to confirm the 2021 recording by apologizing to constituents.

According to NBC News, Martinez compared Mike Bonin's 2-year-old son to an animal and suggested that the county's progressive district attorney should not be supported because Black Angelenos might like him.

The audio from a political strategy meeting that a few Latino Democrats on the council went to on Sunday was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

This month, it was on a Reddit forum, but it was taken down. No one knows where the recording came from, and NBC News does not know if it has been edited.

Mike Bonin Calls City Council to Remove President of the Los Angeles City Council, Nury Martinez

Nury Martinez made rude comments about Bonin, a white man with a Black son, and criticized the boy for misbehaving at a Martin Luther King Day parade.

She said that Bonin's son was acting up on a float that might have toppled over if she and others on the float had not intervened to "parent this kid."

"They're raising him like a little white kid," Martinez said. "I was like, 'This kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, and then I'll bring him back."'

Fox 11 noted that Martinez called the child "ese changuito," Spanish for "that little monkey."

In a statement released on Sunday, Bonin asked Martinez to step down from her position on the City Council and asked the City Council to get rid of her as president.

He said that Kevin de León and union leader Ron Herrera, both in the conversation, should quit their jobs. He also said that Councilman Gil Cedillo's "tacit approval" of the comments upset him.

"We are appalled, angry and absolutely disgusted that Nury Martinez attacked our son with horrific racist slurs, and talked about her desire to physically harm him," Bonin and his partner, Sean Arian, wrote in a statement. "It's vile, abhorrent, and utterly disgraceful."

Nury Martinez, Kevin de León Apologize

Martinez apologized for her remarks in a statement. She said she takes responsibility for her comments since she made them in a moment of "intense frustration and anger. "For that, I am sorry," Martinez said.

"The context of this conversation was concern over the redistricting process and concern about the potential negative impact it might have on communities of color," her statement continues. "My work speaks for itself. I've worked hard to lead this city through its most difficult time."

De León also made an apology Sunday, ABC 7 reported.

He stated that remarks made at that meeting were utterly inappropriate, and he apologized for seeming to support and even take part in specific offensive comments against a colleague and his family. He also said that he had reached out to them.
