More than 1.3 million Twitter users have left the social media platform after its new CEO, Elon Musk has, taken over after his purchase of $44 billion.

Around 877,000 accounts were deactivated, while 497,000 were suspended between October 27 and November 1, according to the MIT Technology Review report.

The outlet reported that it was more than double the usual number. The report was made with the firm Bot Sentinel, which tracks behavior on Twitter and analyzes more than 3.1 million accounts and their daily activity.

Bot Sentinel's founder, Christopher Bouzy, said they observed an increase in people deactivating their accounts, as well as an uptick in accounts suspended by Twitter.

Bot Sentinel found that 11, 535 accounts they were monitoring had been deactivated while 6,824 accounts had been suspended, which happens when Twitter removes accounts for reasons such as inactivity, inauthenticity, or a violation of site rules.

Before Musk bought Twitter, 5,958 accounts were deactivated or suspended, which suggested a more than a 200% increase in account losses in the days after the purchase.

Bouzy said that they believe that the rising deactivations of accounts on the social media platform resulted from people upset with Musk procuring Twitter and decided to deactivate their accounts in protest.

Twitter Under Elon Musk

Musk started his days as CEO of Twitter through massive employee layoffs and overhauling the social media platform's operations.

Chairman of IAC and Expedia, Barry Diller, told CNBC Monday that Twitter is like a toy for Musk.

Diller believes Musk is "quixotic" but "very rational," adding that he thinks the Tesla CEO will stick by the company.

Diller said he thinks Twitter will be better and will be smaller, with Musk figuring out how to improve the social media platform and make it more appealing.

Musk has offered $8 a month for Twitter verification through Twitter Blue. He said that he will give "power to the people."

The new CEO said participants will have priority in mentions, replies, and search while receiving half as many ads. They will also be able to tweet long videos and audio.

Twitter Changes

Musk earlier announced that Twitter will soon allow users to add long-form text to their tweets, saying it would put an end to "absurdity of notepad screenshots."

Musk said that the feature will be followed by "creator monetization for all forms of content," while also highlighting that Twitter's search feature will be improved.

He noted that a search within Twitter reminds him of "Infoseek in '98."

As of now, the Twitter Blue service is only available for iOS users, with those who subscribed can receive the blue checkmark next to their user names.

The blue check marks are proof that Twitter has authenticated the users, which were usually seen in accounts of celebrities, companies, and politicians.
