Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has beaten former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2024 Republican presidential nomination match-up, a new poll shows.

The new nationwide poll conducted by Yahoo News and YouGov was released on Thursday. It showed that DeSantis had a five-point lead over Trump. More than 47% of registered voters support the Republican governor compared to the former president's 42%.

The latest results were taken in the first few days of December, showing a stark turn from a mid-October poll that showed Trump being on top by nine point-lead with 45% favorability to DeSantis's 36%.

In October, 49% of Republican voters said they wanted to see Trump as the GOP presidential nominee over someone else. However, that figure dropped to 41% in December, and the vague "someone else" got 43% or a 6-point boost from 37%.

The poll was conducted from December 1 to 5, surveying 1,653 U.S. adults. It also had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Hypothetical Poll for the 2024 Republican Presidential Nomination

The hypothetical poll was the first to confirm how "far and fast" Donald Trump's political influence has fallen in the weeks since he announced his presidential bid.

Many conservatives blamed the former president for blowing key opportunities and criticized him for hosting a dinner with rapper Kanye West and known White nationalist Nick Fuentes at his Mar-a-Lago home.

DeSantis already claims majority support at 51% in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup among the 24% of U.S. adults who say they cast a GOP primary or caucus vote in 2016. Trump lags behind at 40%.

For voters identified as "strong" Republicans, Trump leads the Florida governor with 53% to 39%. It signifies that Trump's MAGA base remains loyal to him.

Donald Trump vs. Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Presidential Elections

Last month, Donald Trump announced that he will run again for president in 2024 and seek the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump said he was announcing his candidacy for president of the United States to "make America great and glorious again." The former president noted that it will not be his campaign alone but "will be our campaign all together."

Donald Trump's announcement for another presidential bid comes amid the Republican Party infighting after a lackluster performance in the midterms. Republicans failed to secure a Senate majority but narrowly won control of the House.

It was earlier predicted that there would be a "red wave" in midterm elections. However, it did not materialize in the results of the polls.

Trump has already filed the basic paperwork to become a presidential candidate in 2024. The former president filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on November 15.

Trump said he does not know if Ron DeSantis will be running against him, adding that if he runs, "he could hurt himself very badly." He noted that it would not be good for the party.

DeSantis is considered by many to be the most likely candidate to go against Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The Florida governor won a landslide victory for a second term as state governor in the midterm election. However, DeSantis still remained quiet regarding his possible presidential bid.
