Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills safety who collapsed during a game four months ago, has announced his return to the field.

At the press conference when he broke the news on April 18, he also explained that commotio cordis was to blame for his collapse and subsequent hospitalization, per E! News.

"It's a direct blow at a specific point in your heartbeat that causes cardiac arrest, and five-to-seven seconds later, you fall out," Hamlin explained.

"That's pretty much what everyone's seen January 2 this year," he added.

He said he plans to take action to reduce the prevalence of commotio cordis, the top cause of death among young athletes in all sports.

Hamlin said he hopes to show people that fear is a choice by returning to the NFL after a severe condition.

"You can keep going in something without having the answers and without knowing what's at the end of the tunnel," the 25-year-old continued. "Or you might feel anxious, you might feel any type of way, but you keep putting that right foot in front of the left one, and you keep going. I want to stand for that."

Damar Hamlin Collapse

Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, fell on the field, forcing the suspension of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin, who is 24, is said to have fallen on his back right after making a tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins in the open field during the first quarter of the game.

Hamlin sustained a hard blow to the chest when he collided with Higgins, who was racing upfield after making a catch. The Bills star got up right after the play, only to quickly pass out.

Within 10 seconds, Hamlin was receiving treatment from Bills team trainers. Video shows that an ambulance was on the field in less than five minutes, and CPR was performed on Hamlin before he was carried to the hospital more than 15 minutes after he had collapsed.

The Bills and Bengals game was subsequently put on hold without an immediate timetable for its return.

Jordan Rooney, Hamlin's marketing representative, tweeted that Hamlin's vitals were "back to normal" after being put to sleep so that a breathing tube could be inserted down his throat.
