Carlos Slim Helu was born in Mexico City on January 28, 1940. His parents were Maronite Christians from Lebanon named Julian Slim Haddad (born Khalil Salim Haddad Aglamaz) and Linda Helu Atta.

His father gave him numerous lessons as he grew up on business-related subjects, including accounting, management, and finance. Additionally, he learned from his father how to interpret financial documents and keep precise financial records.

Slim discovered compound interest when he bought a government savings bond at eleven. He purchased his first share of stock when he was twelve years old.
