Bryan Randall, the long-term partner of Sandra Bullock, has sadly passed away at the age of 57 following a valiant struggle against ALS, according to TODAY.

"With heavy hearts, we announce that Bryan Randall peacefully departed on August 5 after a courageous battle with ALS, lasting three years," said a statement confirming his passing.

The family noted that Bryan had consciously chosen to maintain his battle with ALS in private, a wish that those close to him respected.

The statement expressed gratitude to the dedicated team of medical professionals who supported Bryan Randall throughout his journey, often going to great lengths to provide care, even at the cost of their commitments.

In light of their loss, the family requested privacy as they navigated through the grieving process and attempted to reconcile with the painful reality of Bryan's departure.

The statement concluded with a heartfelt plea for understanding as they cope with the challenge of bidding farewell to Bryan Randall.

Bryan Randall and Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock, aged 59, initially crossed paths with Bryan Randall, a former model turned photographer, when he captured images of her son Louis's birthday celebration in January 2015, PEOPLE noted.

Their relationship gained visibility later that same year, culminating in a public appearance at the wedding of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux.

The acclaimed actress, a mother to her 13-year-old son Louis and 10-year-old daughter Laila, broached the subject of marriage during a December 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk.

Reflecting on her partnership, Bullock expressed, "I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children-three children, including [Randall's] older daughter. It's the best thing ever."

Discussing marriage, Bullock conveyed her belief that a formal document was not essential for her to be a dedicated partner and mother.

She emphasized her commitment to being present and unwavering through life's challenges, asserting that her bond with a good man provided the foundation for weathering storms.

In the same Red Table Talk episode, Bullock emphasized that Randall's influence positively impacted her children.

She lauded him as an exemplary figure for her children to emulate, acknowledging the differences in their perspectives but noting the underlying unity in their intentions.

Describing their dynamic, Bullock highlighted their contrasting viewpoints and the challenge of co-parenting, alluding to her inclination to handle matters independently.

However, she also acknowledged the importance of occasionally stepping back, listening, and recognizing the shared essence of their intentions, even when they express themselves differently.

What Is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, commonly called Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a rare neurological disorder that primarily targets motor neurons-specialized nerve cells within the brain and spinal cord responsible for regulating voluntary muscle movements, said the National Institute of Health.

Voluntary muscles, essential for activities like walking, speaking, and chewing, are the muscles we consciously engage to create motion.

ALS follows a progressive course, signifying that its symptoms deteriorate over time. Currently, no known cure for ALS exists, and available treatments have proven ineffective in reversing its advancing nature.

As a specific type of motor neuron disease, ALS precipitates the degeneration and eventual demise of motor neurons.

This impairment disrupts the transmission of messages from the brain to the muscles, resulting in muscle weakness, the emergence of involuntary muscle twitches known as fasciculations, and eventual muscle wasting or atrophy.

Ultimately, the brain loses its capacity to initiate and regulate voluntary movements, gradually losing motor function.
