Zoe Saldana has come a long way since growing up in the Dominican Republic as she is now one of Hollywood's most in-demand movie stars. Just how much is her net worth these days, though?

Born as Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario in New Jersey on June 19, 1978, her name reflects both her Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage. Raised in Jackson Heights, New York, Saldana moved to the Dominican Republic at the age of nine with her two sisters and their mother.

While growing up in the Dominican Republic, she took up dancing. According to CA Knowledge, she pursued a career in dance at the ECOS Espacio de Danza Academy. While she practiced many genres, Saldana has admitted that ballet is her true passion but abandoned it because she didn't "have the feet" to pursue being a professional ballerina.

When she finally moved back to New York, though, she took up theater in high school, appearing in a production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." This would kick off her road to superstardom.

Zoe Saldana's Acting Career

Zoe Saldana landed her first big role in 1999 in an appearance in the show, "Law & Order." However, it was her dance background that led her to her first lead role in the 2000 dance film "Center Stage." She then got to star alongside Britney Spears in the film, "Crossroads" in 2002, and then with Nick Cannon on "Drumline" that same year.

She was not the bonafide superstar we have today yet at that time, but things changed when she landed a role in 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl." Her role was not as big, but it was important. This opened some doors and her career soon took off.

Soon, she landed a role in "The Terminal" alongside Tom Hanks, playing an immigration officer and Star Trek fan. She was not very familiar with Star Trek but got some help from none other than Steven Spielberg himself, to tutor her to understand the Star Trek universe and even the Vulcan salute. This came in very handy, as she would soon appear in that very same franchise itself, playing Nyota Uhura in the reboot.

She continued to appear in more films, but her superstar status was cemented when she played the big blue alien, Neytiri in James Cameron's "Avatar." It became the highest-grossing movie of all time when it was released and proved that Saldana was a star. However, her biggest role came later, as she played Gamora in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy."
