A somber investigation is underway in Indiana after a child's life was tragically cut short by gunfire on the city's east side, according to WISHTV.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a distressing call reporting a person shot in the 3700 block of East Market Street at approximately 3:43 pm on Sunday.

Officers swiftly arrived at the scene, finding an Indiana boy with gunshot wounds in an upstairs room of a residence.

Officers made Desperate efforts to administer medical assistance to the Indiana boy before professional medical services arrived. Still, sadly, the child succumbed to their injuries on-site.

Preliminary information indicates that the child was a male aged between 11 and 14.

Additionally, the residence where the incident occurred was inhabited by multiple juveniles when the police arrived.

Investigation Is Ongoing Following Indiana Boy's Accidental Shooting Death

The incident's circumstances remain under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm whether this tragedy was accidental, self-inflicted, or intentional.

The incident is being treated as a death investigation, with homicide and child abuse detectives from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department working tirelessly to piece together the sequence of events.

Indianapolis Police Spokesperson, Officer Genae Cook, underlined the importance of firearm safety, mainly when children are present, saying, "It's so important if you have a firearm or own a firearm in your home, to make sure that you keep them away from our younger people," per FOX 59.

While the investigation is ongoing, the community grapples with the weight of this heart-wrenching loss, and neighbors express their shock. One neighbor, Paul Ingram, reminisced about the child's cheerful presence, reflecting, "They used to play basketball all the time right here in the streets... They never bothered anyone."

This tragic incident compounds the growing concern over juvenile gunshot wounds in Marion County, Indiana.

Fifty-two juveniles survived such injuries in 2022, and this year's numbers are unfortunately on track to surpass that figure.

Alarmingly, sixteen juveniles have already lost their lives to gun violence in the county this year.

Recently, a neglect charge was filed against a mother after her six-year-old son fatally shot himself due to easy access to a handgun.

The incident has prompted discussions about treating juvenile gunshot wounds as a public health emergency.

Man Dies in a Separate Indiana Shooting

In a separate incident, an Indiana man lost his life in a shooting at a local business, WISHTV reports.

Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to Wale's Audio near Hillside Avenue and East 38th Street on Saturday around 1 pm.

At the scene, they discovered a man with gunshot wounds. Despite being transported to a hospital in critical condition, medical staff later pronounced the victim dead.

Authorities withhold the victim's identity and have yet to release information regarding possible suspects.
