Eduardo Verastegui may just be a former telenovela actor and film producer, but he is attracting many Christian conservatives to his cause as he runs for president in the Mexico presidential election next year.

The 49-year-old actor and producer is running as an independent for next year, and he decided to run after Mexico's Supreme Court decriminalized abortion, telling supporters, "Mourning is a reminder for me to recall why I'm doing this."

He is rallying all over deeply Catholic Mexico with his anti-abortion platform. Many conservatives are answering his call. Despite this, he still has a difficult task in gathering about a million signatures by early January to seal his candidacy.

However, according to the Associated Press, Eduardo Verastegui has also sparked some controversy in Mexico, which has been seeing an increase in pro-abortion and feminist advocacies.

The telenovela actor had been very vocal on his stance about religion, LGBTQ+ rights, and abortion, unlike many other Mexican candidates. On TikTok, he often prays and is using his platform to speak against LGBTQ+ inclusion. He has also vowed that if elected, he would do anything in his power to reverse abortion access.

A lot of Christian conservatives are now flocking towards him as they find themselves identifying with his beliefs. Many of his supporters are saying that he is the only prominent anti-abortion candidate in the Mexico presidential election, so that is why they are supporting him.

He is attracting supporters who usually vote for candidates from more established conservative parties. However, with the failure of these parties to stop the decriminalization of abortion, many have been disenchanted and are flocking to Eduardo Verastegui as an alternative instead.

Mexico Presidential Elections Beginning To Take Shape

Several candidates are seen to be running in next year's Mexican presidential elections, which will take place in June 2024. Aside from Eduardo Verastegui, who else is running to replace the outgoing Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador?

According to AQ, Nuevo Leon governor Samuel Garcia has already announced that he will be running. Meanwhile, one of the people seen as a favorite to win, former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, surprised many by announcing he will not be running next year.

The current favorite seems to be the former head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, who is running for the ruling Morena Coalition. Her biggest challenger is Xochitl Galvez of Frente Amplio por México.

Mexico President Already Endorsing Claudia Sheinbaum for Next Year's Presidential Election

As for who is Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador endorsing as his successor, the current president has publicly gone on to place his support for former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

CNN noted that Sheinbaum has been a longtime ally of AMLO and that she has already accepted the baton that he passed to her during a ceremony in a restaurant outside Mexico City.

She has vowed to assume "the full responsibility of continuing the course marked by our people, that of the transformation initiated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador."
